Whoaa that was a long journey, but I’m relieved that I finally completed this drama, AT LAST. LOL.

Hope you enjoy the drama and my work!

Now that this drama has finished, I’ll try to give my (hopefully) objective review about it.

At first, I’m sure that myself, and most of the people out there, can’t help comparing this to the 2007 version one.

I’d like to repeat it over and over again, but I do hope people don’t judge only based on the casts and their biased first impression based on the 2007 version. Even the point of view is different. 2007 version focused on Teppei while this version focused on Daisuke. That alone should set these two differently. I don’t read the novel and I’m pretty sure most of the people judging also didn’t read the novel, so we don’t know which one is truer to the novel. Just, do not judge.

But as for myself, I think both versions have their own strength and flaws, and neither one is completely crap compared to the other. Surely the 2007 version excelled in portraying Teppei and his struggles, the Teppei there was much more miserable compared to this Teppei www. But hey he was the lead character there. They have to make everything more dramatic and get all the spotlight to him! But I’m not saying that Mukai Osamu doesn’t fit for Teppei. Dang, he did a hell out of a job portraying Teppei!!! For me, Mukai Osamu is so much much much much much convincing as Teppei. Hurts me when he chose death 😢

And I know, people keep comparing Nakai Kiichi as Daisuke with the 2007 version. I admitted that at first I was pretty doubtful if he would be able to pull off that ruthless and cunning Daisuke, but hey, I’m so glad to find that the Daisuke here is not all about ambitions and greed and hatred. I’m glad to find myself at least understand why he did what he did, and while I’m not siding with him, I can’t hate him either. After all, he was doing it for survival. Well, his ambitions did get in the way later on, but that was not the initial intention.

In contrary, I feel more pity to him here than the 2007 version in the last episode. I remembered when watching the 2007, I was so satisfied and kept saying “Serves you right!!!” when it looks like Daisuke is regretting his actions and that he will be prey to the politics of the Ministry of Finance (honestly, don’t really remember much details about it). But in the last episode, I did sympathize with Nakai Kiichi’s Daisuke, I feel like… he did everything, went all out to protect his Manpyo Group and his Hanshin Bank, but what did he get in the end? His eldest son died, his daughter eloped to the US, his mistress dismissed, (they didn’t show this literally) but I think both Ichiko and Ginpei also gave up on their marriages? And all that’s left of him is the weak Toyo Bank that will soon be eaten up by some bigger bank. Like… what did he do all that for?

The last scene where Daisuke reminisced of their last New Year’s Eve dinner at Shima Kanko Hotel was so sad 😭

And Ginpei. Gosh I’m so glad of what Ginpei has become in the last episode. He takes over Teppei’s role and be the oniichan Tsugiko needs. Finally, for once, Ginpei does something right. Well to think of it, the only wrong thing he did is only the ones with Makiko though. Aside of that, I love his attitude towards his family. That warm look he gave to Tsugiko in the airport… awww I love that scene a lot!

Don’t get me started on Aiko. She’s the most graceful, elegant and quick-witted lady in the whole series. She is sometimes pushy and arrogant, yes, but she is NOT cheap and bitchy. That’s one thing I like about Uchida Yuki’s Aiko. She is always classy. All her movements are graceful. A proof of her being an educated lady in her time. One thing that I think could be better is that in the end, I was hoping Aiko to hold more of her pride and not try to make things work with Daisuke. But oh well, Daisuke also has a reason for what he did, and as a woman who loves him so much, I can understand why Aiko still wants to make things work.

There are a lot of stuff needs to be noted too though, like the complexities of the financial talks, and how Daisuke and Watanuki conspired to take over Mikumo. There are a bunch of guys who only make things complicated but they all served their purpose www.

All in all, I think this drama is worthy to be the special drama in commemoration of WOWOW’s 30th anniversary, and I’m kind of glad to have taken this project and finished it.

I might want to take a short break from subbing though, this project is really really tiring and brain-consuming 🙈 Anyway I guess I can start subbing Kisumai stuff again now that I have finished this HAHAHAHA so happy.
